Assembly Debate Heats Up: MK Stalin Challenges TVK Govt on Power Tariff Hikes

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly witnessed a heated exchange today as Leader of the Opposition MK Stalin questioned the TVK government's recent decision to adjust industrial power tariffs. Stalin argued that the sudden hike would place an undue burden on MSMEs and manufacturing units, which are already struggling with rising raw material costs. He demanded an immediate rollback, citing the potential for job losses in the industrial sector.

In response, the Treasury benches defended the move, stating that the tariff adjustment was necessary to stabilize the financial health of the state power utility, which has been under significant debt pressure. The government clarified that the hike is targeted at high-consumption industrial categories and that small-scale industries would be provided with a subsidy buffer to mitigate the impact.

This debate highlights the growing friction between the ruling TVK and the DMK over economic policy. While the government maintains that the fiscal correction is essential for long-term sustainability, the DMK has vowed to continue its protests both inside and outside the Assembly until the decision is reconsidered.
