Thoothukudi Coastal Sand Mining Destroying Fishing Village Beach — Fishermen Protest

Fishermen from Periasamypuram and Uvari coastal villages in Thoothukudi district have launched a protest against illegal beach sand mining that is rapidly eroding their fishing grounds and destroying boat landing facilities. Situation on ground: - Periasamypuram beach: 600 metres of coastline eroded by 15–20 metres in 3 months due to sand removal - Uvari village: Traditional boat landing area completely destroyed — fishermen cannot launch boats - Mining happening at night using JCB machines and trucks — approximately 8–10 truckloads per night - Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) notifications clearly prohibit sand mining within 500 metres of coast Impact on livelihood: - 340 fishing families in Periasamypuram directly affected - 180 families in Uvari unable to go to sea — 3 weeks of lost income - Boats being damaged by exposed rocks now visible after sand removal Complaints filed: - Thoothukudi District Collector: August 28, 2026 - Tamil Nadu Coastal Area Authority: September 5, 2026 - No enforcement action in 3 weeks Thoothukudi District Collector: 0461-2322000 TN Coastal Area Authority: 044-28524573 Coastal Police: 0461-2320100
