Environmental activists and forest department staff have raised alarm over large-scale plastic waste dumping on the forest boundary road near Mukurthi National Park in the Nilgiris, threatening wildlife including endangered Nilgiri Tahr. Environmental threat: - Location: Forest boundary road, 3 km from Mukurthi National Park main gate, Ooty - Approximately 4 tonnes of mixed plastic, food packaging, and construction waste found in three separate dump sites - Waste includes single-use plastics, polythene bags, PET bottles, and foam packaging - Nilgiri Tahr spotted near dump site — risk of plastic ingestion - Shola forest stream adjacent to dump site carrying plastic debris during rain Source of waste: Plastic appears to be disposed by tourist buses and resort operators from the Ooty-Gudalur highway corridor. Wildlife at risk: - Nilgiri Tahr (endangered) — 3 sightings near the dump in past week - Gaur (Indian Bison) — regular trail crosses near dump zone - Sambar Deer — grazing area contaminated Forest Department action: Junior Forest Officer from Mukurthi range filed an internal complaint — no enforcement against the dumpers yet.
