A serious fire safety hazard has been identified at the Cuddalore SIPCOT industrial estate where none of the 14 fire hydrant points in Phase 1 and Phase 2 have been functional for the past 8 months due to water supply pressure failure. Safety hazard details: - Cuddalore SIPCOT Phase 1 and Phase 2 — 14 fire hydrant points - All 14 hydrants non-functional due to insufficient water pressure in SIPCOT internal water mains - Last functional test: January 2026 — failed even then - Fire incidents in industrial zones require hydrant water within 90 seconds — impossible currently - 47 chemical, pharmaceutical, and petrochemical units operate in these phases - Nearest Tamil Nadu Fire Service station is 6 km away — 12–15 minutes response time Previous incidents: - A minor fire at a resin manufacturing unit in March 2026 was controlled only because the unit had its own internal suppression system — no SIPCOT hydrant water available Complaint filed: - SIPCOT Cuddalore Estate Manager: February 2026 — acknowledged but unresolved - Tamil Nadu Fire Service Cuddalore: June 2026 — inspection done, notice issued to SIPCOT, no follow-up This is a catastrophic risk — one major fire in this petrochemical zone without functional hydrants could be devastating.
