Madurai's Vaigai River Bank Is Overflowing — Families in Low-Lying Areas Told to Move Out Tonight
Sellur, MaduraiEnvironmentabout 2 months agoVizhiTN Reporter★ 10
The Vaigai river in Madurai is dangerously close to breaching its banks following heavy monsoon rainfall over the past 48 hours. The Madurai district administration has issued an advisory urging residents in low-lying localities near the river to relocate temporarily.
Affected areas include Sellur, Vandiyur, parts of KK Nagar near the river bend, and Thathaneri.
The Water Resources Department is monitoring Vaigai dam levels around the clock. As of this morning, dam discharge has been increased — which means water levels downstream will continue rising through the evening.
🔴 WHAT TO DO:
→ Move valuables to upper floors NOW
→ Do not cross flooded roads on two-wheelers
→ Emergency helpline: 1077 (Madurai District Control Room)
→ Relief camp: Sellur Government School is open
