Chennai Metro Phase-2 Near Launch; 3 New Extensions Proposed
With Phase-2 construction entering final stages, Tamil Nadu has sought Central approval for Airport–Kilambakkam, Koyambedu–Pattabiram, and Poonamallee–Sunguvarchatram corridors.
Why this matters to Tamil Nadu
For Chennai commuters, Phase-2 metro lines will slash travel times on some of the city's most congested north-south and east-west routes. The Madhavaram–SIPCOT corridor alone connects the city's industrial north with its IT south — two poles currently reachable only via choked surface roads. For residents in Pallavaram, Chromepet, Tambaram, and Kilambakkam, the proposed Airport–Kilambakkam extension and double-decker GST Road corridor represent the first credible mass rapid transit solution for South Chennai. The Koyambedu–Pattabiram link would ease pressure on the heavily congested western suburbs.
