CM Vijay Directs Only AC Buses for TN; All-AC Fleet by 2030 Target
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has directed that all future MTC and TNSTC bus procurements be air-conditioned only — setting Tamil Nadu on a course for a fully AC public bus fleet by 2030.
Why this matters to Tamil Nadu
For daily bus commuters across Tamil Nadu — particularly in Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, and other cities that see temperatures regularly exceeding 38°C — air-conditioned buses are not a luxury but a health and productivity necessity. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat during long commutes contributes to heat stress, dehydration, and fatigue. An all-AC fleet makes public transport a viable alternative to private vehicles for a wider income band, including middle-class commuters who currently avoid buses in summer. This modal shift — if it happens — has significant implications for traffic congestion and carbon emissions. However, the policy also raises legitimate questions about fare levels, since AC bus operations cost more than non-AC to run.
