HD Hyundai's ₹38,000 Cr Shipyard at Thoothukudi Advances After MoU
South Korea's HD Hyundai Heavy Industries formalises India's largest-ever shipyard project at Thoothukudi after signing an exclusive business agreement with the Tamil Nadu government.
Why this matters to Tamil Nadu
This is the single largest foreign direct investment committed to Tamil Nadu by a non-IT company in decades, and it lands in Thoothukudi — a district that has historically struggled to attract large-scale organised employment compared to Chennai. For residents of Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and surrounding southern districts, the shipyard and its supply chain will generate tens of thousands of direct and indirect jobs in welding, fabrication, marine engineering, logistics, and port services. At the national level, the 2.5 million GT annual capacity this shipyard adds is meaningful against India's Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 target of 4.5 million GT — Tamil Nadu alone could supply over half the national target from a single facility.
