Thai Care Centres for Pregnant Women; TN Geriatric Care Gets ₹50 Crore
Tamil Nadu Budget 2026–27 establishes Thai (Mother) Care service centres statewide for expectant mothers nearing delivery, and allocates ₹50 crore for a new geriatric care policy for senior citizens.
Why this matters to Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu already achieves near-universal hospital delivery (99.9%), but maternal outcomes in rural and semi-urban areas are still affected by the last-mile problem: women who live far from a government hospital cannot always travel quickly when labour begins. Thai Care centres — essentially pre-delivery lodging facilities near hospitals — solve this directly by allowing women to stay close to a hospital in the final weeks before their due date. The geriatric care policy addresses a longer-term but equally urgent challenge: Tamil Nadu has one of India's oldest populations, with 10.4% of its population above 60 years. As this cohort grows, the state needs dedicated geriatric clinical protocols, trained specialists, and age-appropriate care infrastructure — none of which the general health system currently provides at adequate scale.
